Bouzov Castle

Bouzov is one of the most attractive and representative castles in our country. It has been featured in various Czech and foreign films and TV series, such as Princess and Half the Kingdom, Princess Jasněnka and the Flying Shoemaker, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, The Three Musketeers, and many more.

The original Gothic castle was founded by the knight Búz of Búzov in the early 14th century. Over the centuries, the castle was owned by many significant Bohemian and Moravian families. It is even possible that Bohemian King George of Poděbrady was born there in 1420, because his father, Viktorin, at the time of birth of George was staying on the estate.  Georg, the son of a Bohemian nobleman, was the only Czech King not to descend from the ruling dynasty. Between 1696 and 1939, the Bouzov domain was owned by the Teutonic Order.

The castle’s current form of a Romantic residence with crenellations, oriels, gun ports, and gargoyles dates back to an extensive redevelopment in the 19th and 20th centuries. Two drawbridges and the portcullis have been preserved. This redevelopment was initiated by the High Master of the Teutonic Order, Archduke Eugen of Austria. Most of the furniture in the castle comes from his private collection, but also from the Teutonic Order’s collection. Historical facilities were made specially for the needs of living at the castle in the late 19th century.

The very valuable part of the interior is the Gothic-Revival chapel with a Gothic altar and tombstones of the Masters of the Teutonic Order. Worth mentioning is also the Armoury, Gothic Hall, Hunting Hall, and the representative Knight’s Hall.

Several tours of the castle are available, during which you can explore the castle kitchen, the private flat of Archduke Eugen, secret passages, cellars, spires, and even the attic. You can also attend evening, spooky, and festive tours. Children will surely be delighted with a special tour accompanied by the mysterious, yet playful, Flame.
