Velké Losiny Chateau

The chateau has one of the most prominent displays of late-Renaissance living and architecture in Europe. The exceptionally well-preserved interiors of the chateau are also associated with the infamous inquisition trials of alleged witches in the 17th century.

The chateau was built in the last quarter of the 16th century by John the Younger of Žerotín, who was also instrumental in the development of the local spa and founded the handmade paper mill, still in operation. Dating back to the time of John the Younger is primarily the bulk of the large dining hall with the oldest tile stove in Moravia (1585). The Losiny domain was spared the events of the Thirty Years’ War, due to which the chateau has been preserved in its original form including parts of the furnishings. Truly unique is the collection of leather and textile wall coverings with several tapestries. Another valuable set on display is the Žerotín family portrait gallery.

There are also various curiosities to be seen – a two-seat sedan chair from the late 17th century, the oldest of its kind, a luxurious Baroque sled, etc. At the beginning of the 19th century, the House of Žerotín were forced to sell the indebted domain with chateau to the House of Liechtenstein. They later adapted part of the so-called low chateau in the Biedermeier style and arranged the park into its present-day form. All these conversions were meant to turn the old chateau into a romantic summer residence. In 1945, the chateau was confiscated from the Liechtensteins based on the Beneš Decrees.

The Velké Losiny domain is also infamous for inquisition trials, during which 56 persons were burnt at the stake between 1678 and 1692 for alleged witchery and association with the devil. It is also the setting of a famous Czech novel and later a film –Witchhammer.

During the two guided tours, you can admire the heritage of the House of Žerotín and the House of Liechtenstein – the two most important owners of the domain. The chateau hosts various cultural events, including a theatre festival, throughout the year.
